In isekai anime, fans are often faced with protagonists who don't really want to fight.
Even when they're incredibly powerful – sometimes because they genuinely are – many of them prefer to avoid battles unless absolutely necessary. Instead, they prefer to use their abilities to build their own kingdoms or at least help others.

However, the isekai anime genre is vast, and some protagonists not only enjoy fighting, but they take pleasure in it. Whether they're overpowered or not, some main characters love to see the best of their opponents, just to see if they can secure the victory. These characters are great because they can turn an otherwise dull isekai series into an exciting event with their mere presence.
10. The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic Teaches the Importance of Being a Combat Healer
For an isekai anime focused on healing, the battles in The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic are far more frequent than one might expect. Indeed, while the main protagonist of The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic dislikes fighting, his master, Rose, enjoys it. Rose, Usato's trainer, spends very little time teaching him magic. Instead, she spends most of her time exhausting him and then healing him so that he can continue working hard.
Rose is a combat healer. She understands the dangers of being a healer on the battlefield and knows that without healers, human armies stand no chance. Although The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic doesn't feature many large-scale war scenes, the first season centers around a gigantic battle, with Rose and Usato at the heart of it. By the end, both Rose and Usato are among the best healers in the anime.
9. The Main Character of Inuyasha Is Constantly Trying to Prove Himself
Inuyasha follows the adventures of Kagome, a high school girl, and her partner, Inuyasha, a half-demon, half-human, in Sengoku-era Japan. Throughout most of the series, the two collaborate to collect the shards of the powerful Shikon Jewel. Kagome prefers to carry out her mission by fighting as little as possible. The same can't be said for her partner, Inuyasha.
Due to his half-human, half-demon heritage, Inuyasha is always eager to prove himself. When it comes to the Shikon Jewel, he's always ready to charge headfirst into battle with other demons to show his strength. When he's overwhelmed, his body even transforms him into a demonic version of himself, a berserker. His growth, from impulsive to someone who knows how to calm down, is why Inuyasha remains one of the best anime celebrating its 25th anniversary.
8. The Frame of Failure Presents a Protagonist Seeking Revenge
Failure Frame is part of a subgenre of isekai anime featuring protagonists on a quest for revenge. The series follows Mimori Touka, a high school student whose entire class is summoned to a fantasy world. However, Touka is ranked as a Class E hero and is abandoned by the goddess in dangerous ruins. Refusing to give up, Touka explores his powers and begins to develop his skills, seeking a way to make the goddess pay for her actions and, with some luck, find a way out of his current world.
After gaining power, Touka relishes the battles he participates in. However, he's not exactly an honorable fighter: his abilities inflict status effects, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to satisfy them and secure his victories. Living in a harsh world, he has no fear of the consequences his powers have on his enemies.
7. The monsters protagonists of Tsukimichi -Moonlit Fantasy- love fighting tough opponents
Misumi Makoto, portrayed in Tsukimichi, should seek revenge for the way he was treated. He was taken to a parallel world to fight an army of demons, but the goddess of that world rejected him for his ugliness. Despite this, he accepted the situation with philosophy, and his closest allies are the true fighters of his group.
Tomoe and Mio are co-protagonists with Makoto, and both love proving their superiority. Belonging to one of the most powerful non-human races in their world, they are nearly invincible against an average Hyuman, and even demons stand no chance against them. Mio even showed a certain willingness to injure herself just for the pleasure of mastering a new combat technique.
6. The protagonist of The Eminence in Shadow is constantly seeking to test his powers
Cid Kagenou creates a slimy dagger in The Eminence in Shadow. Image via Nexus. In his past life, Minoru Kageno only aspired to become one of the secret powers of his world, managing affairs from the shadows. He was never able to achieve this goal in his own world, but his reincarnation changed everything. In the new world, he became Cid Kagenou and gained access to all the power and magic he could never have obtained in the normal world.
Given that The Eminence in Shadow tells the story of a man trying to dominate the world, one might think that the isekai anime focuses on the protagonist avoiding combat as much as possible. However, Cid loves fighting, using it as an excuse to test new weapons or powers. Fortunately, as the leader of the Shadow Garden, he has many opponents to face within the Diabolos Cult.
5. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest, He Will Crush Any Enemy to Return Home
Arifureta is another isekai anime series telling the story of a boy seeking revenge for the way he was treated. Hajime was transported along with his high school class to another world, where everyone except him received special, overpowered abilities. Despite this, he tried to live peacefully until he was betrayed and abandoned in a dungeon. To survive, Hajime developed his Transmutation skill, creating weapons capable of killing the monsters he fought, then consuming them to stay alive.
Transformed by his experience in the dungeon, Hajime went from being a shy, quiet child to a confident warrior. His main goal is to find a way to return home, and for that, he is willing to enter any battle. Even though he doesn't take as much pleasure in fighting, he will never back down if it brings him closer to his goal.
4. Trapped in a Dating Sim: He Stages a Hero Who Loves Using His Power to Show Off
Stuck in a Dating Sim Leon in the cockpit of his mech. Image via ENGI In Trapped in a Dating Sim, the protagonist is Leon Fou Bartfort, reincarnated into another world after dying following a sleepless night spent playing an otome video game for his little sister. Leon reincarnates into this game but remains a secondary character, or "mob." Unfortunately, his new world is one where women control everything, and Leon is forced to prove his worth before being married to someone against his will.
To achieve his goal, Leon eagerly jumps into combat against his opponents. His knowledge of the game allowed him to quickly acquire end-game weapons, making him overpowered, even against higher-ranked nobles. In addition to seeking to gain enough notoriety to marry someone who will allow him to live a peaceful life, Leon also enjoys putting arrogant nobles in their place. He has already turned his entire school against him, simply to prove that nobles are not as prominent as they appear.
3. The Heroes of Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise Treat Their World Like a Challenging Video Game
The big twist of Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise is that the series has always been an isekai anime. Of course, all the protagonists are players who connect to a world where they face AI and other players, like in the previous Build Divers. Yet, halfway through the series, we discover that the characters are actually traveling to another world with each connection.
Beyond all that, this new version of Team Build Divers is just as eager for battles. They dive into the world over and over again to face increasingly powerful enemies. While some do it for the rewards, most simply enjoy testing their piloting skills and the quality of their Gunpla models.
2. The Leader of Black Summoner is Constantly Seeking the Next Challenge
Black Summoner features a protagonist so obsessed with strength that he sacrificed his own memories. Kelvin reincarnated into a new fantasy world, with no memory of his past life, as he abandoned them to become the most powerful summoner his new world has ever known. Most of the time, however, he keeps his power secret, just to avoid being discovered.
Still, nothing excites Kelvin more than fighting other strong beings. He even went so far as to deceive a group of heroes by making them believe he was a bandit, just to discover their true strength. A level of commitment even the Saiyans would be proud of.
1. Sunraku of Shangri-La Frontier Loves Tough Battles
Rakuro, from Shangri-La Frontier, built his career by playing trash games filled with defects and bugs. However, after years of passion for trash games, someone eventually convinces him to play a good game to cure his burnout. To his surprise, Shangri-La Frontier, a full VRMMO, turns out to be better than he could have imagined.
Sunraku is the very embodiment of a hero who loves to fight. Even more so, he thrives on challenges, avoiding the tutorial area of Shangri-La Frontier to jump straight into battles. Even his design is based on his love for combat, as he sacrifices his armor for speed, allowing him to attack as much as he wants without being limited. Fortunately for him, Shangri-La Frontier is not lacking in powerful zone bosses to face.
