The duels in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX laid the foundation for the rest of the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime.
Compared to the duels in the original series, those in GX are more fast-paced, focus on a broader cast of characters, and feature decks with actual archetypes rather than vague themes. Some of its best duels highlight the comedic side of the anime's early seasons, while others fully embrace the dark drama of seasons 3 and 4.

10. Chazz vs. Aster Gives Yu-Gi-Oh! GX’s Underdog the Victory He Deserves
Shortly after Yu-Gi-Oh! GX begins, Chazz Princeton shifts from Jaden Yuki’s main rival to a comedic character. Despite being one of Duel Academy’s top students, possessing one of the most entertaining decks to watch in action, and having one of the best character arcs in the series, he rarely gets to win. That’s why Chazz’s final duel in the anime, against Jaden’s secondary rival Aster Phoenix, is such a satisfying watch.
Taking place during a mini-arc where Chazz aspires to become a pro duelist, the match is arranged by Mike, a shady promoter trying to boost Chazz’s career by forcing Aster to throw the duel. Chazz’s desire for success clashes with his pride and morals, but Jaden’s intervention ultimately allows both duelists to compete fairly. Armed Dragon and Ojamas vs. Destiny HERO is an incredible showdown, and Chazz stuns both the audience and fans by securing a hard-earned, legitimate victory over Aster.
9. Jaden vs. Aster Round 3 Introduces the Neo-Spacians
Jaden Yuki is one of the strongest duelists in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, but that doesn’t mean he’s invincible. At the start of Season 2, he suffers a crushing defeat against Aster Phoenix, with the Light of Destruction nearly breaking his spirit. Of course, Jaden eventually regains his confidence—this time, with a new set of allies better equipped to take down Aster than his Elemental HERO cards.
After watching Jaden rely on the same cards for so long, it’s refreshing to see all the new monsters and strategies he gains access to with his Neo-Spacian deck. Likewise, after being manipulated by Aster and his leader Sartorius all season, it’s cathartic to see Jaden finally counter them—and win. The contrast between Jaden’s carefree nature and Aster’s extreme seriousness adds even more depth to the duel, as both duelists firmly believe they’re fighting for the right cause.
8. Chazz vs. Slade Is Driven by a Unique Gadget
Chazz’s character arc is by far the most developed aspect of Season 1, and it reaches its peak when he is forced to duel his older brother, Slade Princeton. After receiving permission from Seto Kaiba to purchase and destroy Duel Academy if he can defeat one of its students under his chosen conditions, Slade forces Chazz into a duel, with the stipulation that he cannot use any monster with more than 500 ATK. Not only is he at a disadvantage, but without a deck that meets these conditions, Chazz is compelled to build a new one, leading to the development of his iconic Ojama strategies.
The first half of Season 1 highlights the abuse Chazz has long suffered at the hands of his older brothers, constantly losing in his attempts to impress them. Not only do the unique conditions of Chazz vs. Slade make it memorable, but it also marks the culmination of Chazz’s early story, as he stops caring about his brothers’ opinions and protects his school. Watching Chazz become the hero of Duel Academy is a wonderful spectacle, and the revelation that Kaiba never believed Slade had a chance to win is a hilarious moment.
7. Jaden vs. Yubel Is One of the Strangest Climaxes in All of Yu-Gi-Oh!
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX often struggles to make the final duels between Jaden and his sworn enemies as memorable as the iconic duels of Yugi Muto against Maximillion Pegasus, Yami Marik, Dartz, and Yami Bakura. The only time this issue is avoided is in Season 3, which concludes with the dramatic and shocking duel between Jaden and Yubel. Comprising five episodes and two parts, where Jaden duels Jesse Anderson, possessed by Yubel, and Yubel themselves, this duel is full of twists and puts the entire season into context.
With almost all of his friends dead and only a slim chance to save the universe, Jaden fights with all his might against Yubel. However, no matter what he does, Yubel maintains complete control of the duel and is on the verge of winning. The situation is only saved when Jaden fully regains his memories of Yubel, from the love they shared in his past life to their use as his childhood favorite monster, and manages to find the path to victory. In one of the most emotional duel endings, Jaden doesn’t defeat Yubel, but instead fuses with them, promising to never leave them alone again.
6. Jaden vs. Zane, Round Two, is One of the Tightest Duels in the Entire Yu-Gi-Oh! Franchise
The duel between Jaden and Zane Truesdale marks the grand finale of Season 1. Having already lost to Duel Academy’s star student, Jaden remains the only opponent Zane deems worthy of facing in his Graduation Duel. Fresh off a battle with Kagemaru, Jaden eagerly accepts Zane’s challenge and prepares to unleash his Elemental Heroes against the seemingly invincible Cyber Dragon deck.
The exchange between Jaden and Zane is incredible, both appearing as monsters of equal power. The tension builds over time, and defeating the Cyber End Dragon seems impossible for Jaden. The subplot, where Jaden doesn’t initially fight as himself, doesn’t quite work, but the conclusion is redeemed by the explosive finale, where both Jaden and Zane boost their monster’s ATK points to ridiculous levels, clashing in a battle to the end.
5. Jaden vs. Dr. Crowler, Round Two, Brings the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Anime Full Circle
The climax of Season 4 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX comes as Jaden and his friends reflect on what they’ll do with their lives as graduation approaches. The best duel of this arc is Dr. Crowler’s rematch against Jaden. While their first duel in Episode 1 was fueled by Crowler’s immediate hatred of Jaden, this showdown between Elemental Heroes and Ancient Gear Machines reflects Crowler’s attachment to his student.
Crowler faces off against Jaden to try and stop him and his friends from graduating, even though he knows they need to move on. The duel, beautifully executed, calls back to the first duel between Crowler and Jaden, even ending with the victory of the Elemental Hero Flame Wingman over Ancient Gear Golem. Jaden demonstrates that he values Crowler as much as Crowler values him, and it’s one of the first times in Season 4 that Jaden manages to briefly escape his depression and smile.
4. Jaden vs Yugi: A Meaningful Fan-Service Duel
For the first spin-off series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, it was only natural that the final duel of the anime would feature the original protagonist of the franchise, Yugi, facing off against his successor, Jaden. This leads to a fan-service-packed finale, where Yugi and the Pharaoh Atem take on Jaden, using their most iconic monsters like the Dark Magician and Slifer the Sky Dragon. While it’s a unique treat to see these beloved heroes again, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX doesn't forget that Jaden is at the heart of the story.
Traumatized and broken by the events of the first three seasons, Jaden spends most of season 4 in a depressive state, having lost the love for dueling that once defined him. It’s only through the supernatural miracle of being able to face his hero, the King of Games, that Jaden finally regains his smile and remembers the joy that a duel can bring. Unfortunately, the outcome of the duel is never revealed, but that’s the point: Jaden doesn’t need a victory, but rather a reminder that the true importance lies not in winning a regular duel.
3. Axel vs The Supreme King: The Last Hero Standing Defeats an Unstoppable Enemy
In episode 142 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, Jaden is transformed into the monstrous Supreme King by the Sweet Darkness. He has killed most of his friends, and the remaining heroes are either too weak to intervene, incapacitated, or not truly honest. The only man still capable of resisting the Supreme King is Axel Brodie. After overcoming the trauma of seeing Jim Cook die in battle against the Supreme King, Axel risks his life, fights his way through the dictator’s army, and challenges him to a duel.
While Axel’s Volcanic deck proved effective against Jaden in the past, the Supreme King’s Evil Hero deck is unprecedented. Despite all his efforts, Axel is unable to overcome the tyrant’s overwhelming power and is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice. In a dark and fitting conclusion to this mini-arc, Axel forces a draw and uses the Orichalcos Eye, inherited from Jim, to free Jaden from the Sweet Darkness, but dies in the process.
2. Axel vs Trueman: A Blend of Yu-Gi-Oh! and Psychological Horror
Although Jaden ignored most of his friends during season 4, Axel remains a trusted ally. Unfortunately, this leads Axel to suffer one of the most horrific losses in the series: he is forced to duel against Trueman, the agent of Darkness. Axel proves he has the skills necessary to defeat Trueman, but that means little when Darkness spends the entire duel rewriting Axel’s memories and mentally torturing him.
The origins of Yu-Gi-Oh! lie in horror manga, and Axel vs Trueman taps into that. Axel is destabilized, distracted, and vulnerable to Trueman, forced to relive the trauma of his childhood: saving his father from a fire instead of his mother. Helpless against Trueman and his Volcanic Queen, Axel is defeated and assimilated by Darkness. To top it off, the final scene of episode 169 reveals that Axel's parents are still alive and that all his flashbacks were merely illusions placed in his mind by Trueman.
1. Zane vs Yubel: The Most Intense Duel of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Zane vs Yubel is the most popular duel of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, and for good reason. A hero in season 1, a villain in season 2, and an antihero against the main antagonist in season 3, Zane is one of the coolest and most tragic characters in the anime. His descent into darkness leads to a heart failure, and when he challenges Yubel, his only goal is to have one final, glorious duel before his inevitable death.
Zane is on the verge of achieving his goals, with his duel against Jesse, possessed by Yubel, and his Advanced Crystal Beasts being more thrilling than ever. The strategies employed by two of the best duelists in the franchise are brilliant; it’s impressive to see the Cyber End Dragon face off against the Rainbow Dark Dragon. One truly starts to believe that Zane is capable of achieving the impossible and defeating the season's big bad. Unfortunately, despite the power of his monster, Zane loses, and the intensity of the duel causes a heart failure, resulting in his death.
